A Life of Service, Faith, and Community
Meet Father Mike
From the stages of Paris to the pulpit of Deadwood, Father Mike’s journey is a remarkable testament to faith, creativity, and compassion. His life has been shaped by extraordinary experiences, beginning with his studies under the legendary mime Marcel Marceau in France. What started as an artistic pursuit soon became a global mission rooted in service and dedication. His journey took him around the world, teaching while also engaging in outreach that supported communities in need across Rwanda, Ireland, Ukraine and the former Soviet Union. Through these global missions, Father Mike brought hope, faith, and healing to those facing adversity. Each chapter of his life reflects a deep commitment to compassion, creativity, and service. Today, that same passion continues to guide his leadership at St. John’s Episcopal Church, where he fosters a welcoming community rooted in faith, history, and heartfelt service.

A Shepherd with a Story
With a background as diverse as his calling, Father Mike brings creativity, compassion, and leadership to St. John’s Episcopal Church. His ministry reflects a deep commitment to faith and service, welcoming everyone with an open heart.
“St. John’s is more than a church—it’s a community where everyone belongs.“
– Father Michael Johnson
Early Life and a Creative Calling
Born in Halstad, Minnesota, Father Mike’s early life hinted at the unique journey that lay ahead. His passion for creativity led him to pursue a degree in speech and theater at Moorhead State College, where his love for the arts flourished. During this time, he worked as a lighting technician for renowned artists such as Kenny Rogers and John Denver—an early indication of his ability to blend technical skill with artistic passion.
A turning point came in 1970 when he crossed paths with the legendary French mime Marcel Marceau. Initially hired to assist with stage lighting for Marceau’s tour, Father Mike’s dedication and precision left a lasting impression on the master performer. That connection led to a life-changing opportunity: a scholarship to study mime in Paris under Marceau’s personal mentorship. This experience broadened his understanding of creativity, discipline, and the expressive power of silence.
A New Chapter in Deadwood
In 1972, Father Mike first visited the Black Hills, bringing his passion for the arts to Deadwood. He co-founded the Centennial Theatre and the Company of Fine Arts, enriching the community through performances and artistic expression. His work as the mime-in-residence for the South Dakota Arts Council allowed him to share his love for the performing arts across the state.
Beyond the stage, Father Mike embraced the rural heart of South Dakota. While teaching theater at Black Hills State University, he also worked as a ranch hand in rural St. Onge, connecting deeply with the land and its people. It was during these formative years that his ties to Deadwood grew stronger, setting the stage for a deeper calling.
Answering the Call to Ministry
Though he had long felt drawn to faith, it wasn’t until a personal crisis reshaped his life that Father Mike fully embraced his spiritual calling. In 1988, he was ordained, marking the beginning of a ministry journey that would stretch across continents and cultures.
His mission work took him around the world, each experience adding depth to his understanding of compassion and service. In Ireland, he worked tirelessly to bridge religious and political divides, offering hope and healing in communities torn apart by conflict. During a period of heavy religious persecution in the Soviet Union, Father Mike risked his safety to smuggle Bibles to those who longed for spiritual freedom. His dedication led him to Rwanda in the aftermath of the 1994 genocide, where he taught Scripture to local pastors—expanding a small group of 12 to more than 140 in just a year, providing them with the tools and guidance to help rebuild their communities.
His ministry also extended to Israel and Jamaica, where he shared his message of faith and compassion with those in need, forming meaningful connections across cultures and backgrounds. Closer to home, Father Mike served a congregation of Sudanese refugees in Moorhead, Minnesota, offering spiritual support and fostering a strong sense of community for individuals displaced by war and hardship. Through every chapter of his ministry, Father Mike’s commitment to service, compassion, and faith remained unwavering.
Returning Home to Deadwood
In 2012, Father Mike returned to St. John’s Episcopal Church in Deadwood—where he had once been married decades earlier. For him, this was more than a new assignment; it was a homecoming. As the church’s leader, his focus remains on fostering community, offering spiritual guidance, and ensuring that St. John’s continues to be a place of welcome and faith for all who enter.
Beyond his ministry, Father Mike has served as Chairman of the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission, and Chair for the Public Art Committee and as a City Commissioner, overseeing and championing efforts to preserve Deadwood’s rich heritage for future generations.
